Palm oil and palm fat
Palm oil is the most widely used oil worldwide and used as crude and refined. It is naturally reddish in color due to its high beta-carotene content.
In Europe it is most commonly used in refined form and is the most common ingredient in the food industry. Often combined with other oils and fats, they together determine the fatty acid content and functionality of the end product.
Due to its neutral aroma and taste, palm oil is considered ideal for the thermal processing of food. Palm oil has been widely used in the confectionery industry.
Palm oil and health
Palm oil has been used for thousands of years for both edible and health purposes. It is obtained from the fleshy part of the fruit of the oil palm. Global palm oil production - as well as demand for it - is growing. In terms of production, it ranks second in the world after soybean oil.
It is a quality, stable oil rich in vitamins and minerals. It is rich in vitamins A and E, as well as beta-carotene and lycopene. In addition, it contains the antioxidants sitosterol and squalene, phenolic acid and flavonoids. Compared to other types of vegetable oils, palm contains about 50% of saturated fatty acids, 40% of monounsaturated and 10% of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
